The device is used for bidirectional data transfer between RS422 and RS232 lines, and it converts the incoming data from the RS422 line to discrete outputs. The device also includes 4 digital inputs, which are by default unused.

AS11 can be connected to an avionics-grade Mission Display Unit (MDU) 268. The device receives data for communication with an external keyboard via RS422, and depending on the received data, the relay outputs are switched.
